 As of March 1, 2025, the world's oceans are experiencing significant changes due to climate change and human activities. Key observations include:


Marine Heatwaves and Ocean Temperatures


The frequency of marine heatwaves has increased substantially, now occurring three-and-a-half times more often than in previous decades. These heatwaves elevate ocean temperatures, leading to severe impacts such as increased storm intensity, threats to marine life, and disruptions to commercial fishing. For instance, Cyclone Gabrielle in New Zealand was intensified by these elevated temperatures. 


Sea Level Rise


Global sea levels have risen approximately 8–9 inches (21–24 centimeters) since 1880, with the rate of rise accelerating in recent years. In 2023, global average sea level reached a new record high, measuring 101.4 mm (3.99 inches) above 1993 levels. 


Ocean Acidification


The average pH of ocean surface waters has decreased to 8.1, making them about 30% more acidic compared to pre-industrial times. This acidification threatens marine life, disrupts food webs, and undermines services the ocean provides, including our own food security. 


Marine Biodiversity


Iconic reef-building corals in Florida, such as elkhorn and staghorn, are no longer successfully reproducing in the wild. Factors like disease, marine heatwaves, pollution, and seaweed overgrowth hinder coral larvae from settling, raising concerns about the future of these vital ecosystems. 


Ocean Currents


Recent studies suggest that a complete shutdown of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a crucial ocean current system, is unlikely to occur this century. However, the AMOC is expected to weaken, which could still lead to significant climate impacts. 


Wave Heights


Rising ocean temperatures and shifting weather patterns have led to larger and more powerful waves. The Southern Ocean, for example, has seen wave heights increase by 30 centimeters between 1985 and 2018. This trend poses risks of severe coastal flooding and economic impacts on coastal communities. 


Regional Observations


In New England, ocean warming slowed in 2024, with the Gulf of Maine's surface temperature at 51.5°F (10.8°C), which is 0.88°F (0.49°C) above the long-term average. While this marks a slight decrease from previous years, temperatures remain elevated, affecting marine species and ecosystems. 


These developments underscore the profound and multifaceted changes occurring in our oceans, highlighting the need for continued research and proactive measures to mitigate adverse effects.
